Renting A Private Lake Home

Renting a Private Lake Home

Robin's Guide to a Successful Rental

Renting a private lake home offers a different experience from a resort, hotel, motel or a bed and breakfast. First of all, some flexibility is necessary when renting a private home.

What are some of the benefits?

You are staying in someone's home with access to all the rooms, the grounds and the lake. Privacy is one of the main features offered. If you feel like raiding the refrigerator for a midnight snack, the only thing you need to worry about is disturbing your cabin mates.

You are welcome to have guests to your vacation rental as long as the numbers do not exceed the limit set with your reservation.

Unlike a resort, you may swim when you like, or read, or lounge in the hammock and not have to worry about schedules or someone waiting in line for the same pleasure.

What are your added responsibilities?

CabinFinders does not provide daily maid service. You make your beds, you keep the home tidy, and you will have to come up with your own entertainment and recreation plans. These are the same things you might expect if you had a guest in your own home. But also, if you run out of toilet paper, light bulbs or soap you will need to go to the local store to replace these items.

Will this home be clean?

We do get questions about cleanliness. Of course we hope all of our homes meet CabinFinders' standard for "clean." Just as the renter has an agreement with CabinFinders, so do the homeowners. After a rental CabinFinders is responsible for cleaning the home. We always try to do our best. However, "clean" means different things to different people. I have had one person remark on how clean a home was, only to have the next renter of the same home say, "It could have been cleaner."

If you demand a home pass the "white glove test" you might not be happy renting a private home. If something is not clean to your standards perhaps the best thing to do is clean it yourself.

Air Conditioning

Most of the lake homes do not have air-conditioning. We try to make sure there are enough room fans to help on the occasional hot night.

Boats

Remember that if you bring a boat to the rental home, CabinFinders is not responsible in any way for your boat or the dock you moor your boat to. The risk is yours. The wind can be strong on the lakes and on occasion entire docks, boat lifts and boats have been damaged. Again remember that liability is yours.

Please keep in mind that for all practical purposes you are on your own when you rent a private home. Due to the distances between these homes and CabinFinders' up north location it is not always feasible for us to attend to non-emergency matters. Neither property owners nor I are hotel concierges. (However, for a cup of coffee I can be quite helpful!)

If you follow the rules of conduct set forth in the Rental Agreement then you should have great success with your rental.

If you have questions please call us at 888-205-8180.

Sincerely,

Robin McCormick
